The film is based in part on Doris Kearns Goodwin's biography of Lincoln, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, and covers the final four months of Lincoln's life, focusing on Lincoln's efforts in January 1865 to have the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution passed by the United States House of Representatives.

Lincoln movie review

Daniel Day-Lewis stars as our honest Abe in this biopic. This film takes places shortly after the emancipation proclamation has taken place. This film centers primarily on Lincoln attempting to get the 13th Amendment signed to end the war and to free the slaves for good. In the scheme of things, in the entire two and a half hours, that was the whole plot, and every intricate detail in order to get that amendment finished and signed, complete with objections and arguments. On an educational standpoint, the movie is incredibly important. There is simply not enough Lincoln movies that portray things in a historically accurate account, or revolved so complex around this specific time with the amendment, and it does feel complete. It's a very good movie, however...on an entertainment standpoint, you may feel that it lacks, is too long, and ultimately boring if you have no interest in politics or biographies. Don't misunderstand this as the movie did anything wrong or bad, because it didn't.The look was accurate, the characters made sense and the actors had a strong performance, and did an absolutely incredible job portraying their characters.

Lewis did a fantastic job portraying a loopy guy telling funny stories to a serious man doing the necessary. The plot was solid and had a clear goal with a beginning, middle, and end. It did absolutely everything it was supposed to do, but where it misses out is a connection to some of the audience. It connects with it's target audience, which is great, but anyone else who may be interested in the movie might have a hard time keeping their eyes open. Even though there was a lot of information put in, there was maybe a few things they could have cut out to make the movie shorter, and ultimately, not as boring. Yes, everyone has preferences for any movie, this is just a forewarning for those of you going to the movie simply because it has high reviews and is no stranger to being near the top of the box office. There are two main points that absolutely anyone who has ever heard of Abraham Lincoln would visualize. Firstly, the Emancipation Proclamation. We know it so well now that we can use our imagination to paint a picture, and even summon some of the legendary speech. The other memorable thing about Lincoln is the assassination by John Wilkes Booth, both of these moments, while in the movie, aren't done in the way you would expect. Take that as you will, but some may feel disappointed in this fact. Some of us actually like to watch them happen, as it makes the character feel more credible as Lincoln.

One great thing about the film is that even though it is a biography-centered film, we don't go through any of Lincolns childhood, but go straight for the biggest part of his career, the last years on Earth. Short, sweet, and to the point. Unfortunately, the film itself is not as short. In the end it really is a give or take, love or hate film. Even though you may find it boring, you will realize that the rest of the experience proves that an incredible amount of effort was put into the film. There was never a question of how well it was done professionally, it was only a question of preference.Check "Lincoln" out if you love biopics or political films, if not, I'd advise to just stay away, as you will probably have a hard time enjoying it.
